It is a solo transatlantic sailing race, run every 4 years, at the end of October/beginning of November, between Saint-Malo in Brittany and Point-à-pitre in Guadeloupe.
Created in 1978 by Michel Etevenon, it has been organized since 2006 by OC Sport Pen Duick.
Francis Joyon currently holds the record! He won the Ultim 32/23_ IDEC Sports_ in 2018, in 7 days, 14 hours, 21 minutes, and 47 seconds.
Several types of boats participate in this crossing, they are divided into 4 pro classes (IMOCA, Ultim 32/23, Class 40 and Ocean 50) and 2 amateur categories (Rhum Mono and Rhum Multi).
The start will be given on November 6, 2022 at 1:02 p.m.! Why this precise time? This makes it easier to broadcast the start live on television but also to align exactly with the Greenwich Mean Time, which will serve as the basis for calculating the competitors' passing times at specific points along the course.

The Route du Rhum stretches 3,543 nautical miles between Saint-Malo and Pointe-à-Pitre (6,561.636 km). Crossing the Atlantic Ocean, several crucial points must be taken into serious consideration, including the low-pressure system in the Bay of Biscay, the trade winds, and the famous Sargasso Sea.
The race lasts approximately 7 days for the fastest yachts (Ultim 32/23) and beyond 30 days depending on the performance of the last skippers to cross the finish line. The Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe 2022 event itself spans 41 days, including the opening and closing of the villages in Saint-Malo and Pointe-à-Pitre.
Like all major sporting events (Olympic Games, Football World Cup, etc.), the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe has taken place every four years, alternating with the Vendée Globe, another major French race.
This is the DNA of the race, which has never been reserved for a single elite. Diversity and the mixing of genres are the credo of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe, where a postal worker and his production sailboat can take the same start as the professional skipper at the helm of a carbon racing beast. There will be 138 solo sailors at the start, a participation record! 🎉
No, for safety reasons, our four-legged friends are not allowed in the village. Except for assistance dogs. 🐶
