Des bateaux spectaculaires, des skippers aguerris, une capacité à flirter en permanence avec les limites tout en offrant des scénarios et des images à couper le souffle... Les Ocean Fifty promettent un sacré spectacle à la Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe, d’autant que les onze bateaux de la classe seront tous sur la ligne de départ. De quoi achever en beauté ce cycle de quatre ans où la classe a accueilli de jeunes skippers très talentueux et de nouveaux sponsors. État des lieux.


C’est une expérience à part entière, un condensé de sport et d’engagement. Observer des Ocean Fifty, c’est la garantie d’en prendre plein les yeux. Ces bolides de 15 mètres (50 pieds) affolent les compteurs en repoussant constamment les limites et en tutoyant les 40 nœuds. En somme, ils sont un concentré de sensations fortes, de vitesse et d’explosivité. Il faut de la maîtrise, de la précision, une bonne dose de savoir-faire et pas mal de sang-froid pour parvenir à apprivoiser ces machines particulièrement exigeantes. 

L’attention se doit d’être permanente, encore plus quand les conditions sont chaotiques, ce qui est régulièrement le cas à la Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe à cause des dépressions automnales qui traversent le parcours. Les skippers de la classe ont bien conscience de la difficulté à tirer le meilleur de leur Ocean Fifty tout en veillant à ne pas chavirer. Cette conscience permanente du danger et la gestion du risque qui en découle participent à la singularité d’une classe où le niveau n’a jamais été aussi élevé. « À bord, on monte rapidement autour des 30 nœuds, tout en maîtrise, rappelle Luke Berry (Le Rire Médecin Lamotte). Ces bateaux, ce sont d’incroyables vecteurs d’émotions. Moi, je les appelle des machines à sourire ! »

Des performances comparables pour tous

Les onze Ocean Fifty seront tous sur la ligne de départ à Saint-Malo le 1er novembre prochain. À l’exception d’un bateau, tous ont été conçus par deux cabinets d’architecture, Romaric Neyhousser et VPLP. Afin de limiter l’impact carbone de la classe et de permettre que les concurrents évoluent au même niveau, aucune nouvelle construction additionnelle d’Ocean Fifty n’est autorisée. Cette jauge a contribué au fil des années à renforcer la classe malgré les différences de générations. Pour y entrer, il convient donc d’acquérir déjà un bateau existant. C’est ce qu’a réalisé l’an dernier Sodebo, détenteur du Trophée Jules Verne depuis janvier, en reprenant un bateau construit en 2009 pour son jeune skipper Léonard Legrand.

Cette stratégie, appelée « numerus clausus », permet d’homogénéiser la flotte… Et de renforcer le suspense. Il y a un an, lors de la Transat Café L’Or, les trois premiers étaient d’ailleurs tous à bord de bateaux d’anciennes générations : Viabilis Océans mis à l’eau en 2017, Wewise en 2018, Le Rire Médecin Lamotte en 2009. De plus, les Grands Prix disputés cette année n’ont établi aucune hiérarchie claire : il y a eu cinq vainqueurs différents lors des deux premiers actes et seulement quatre points séparent le 1er (Elvest 24 pts) du 3e (Edenred, 20 pts).  « La densité de la flotte est impressionnante, le niveau très homogène et on est nombreux à vouloir jouer devant », confie Baptiste Hulin (Viabilis Océans). Si le vainqueur de la Transat Café L’Or reconnaît « avoir quelques points de confiance dans son sac », il sait « que ça peut être ultra serré à l’arrivée et qu’on souhaite tous monter sur le podium ».

Un renouvellement très conséquent

Côté skippers, la classe s’est fortement renouvelée ces dernières années. « Nous avons la chance d’avoir un plateau fabuleux avec des jeunes, des expérimentés, des fougueux et surtout de très bons skippers, résume Thibault Vauchel-Camus (Solidaires en Peloton). Il y a une diversité de profils et ces dernières saisons, nous avons eu la chance d’apprendre à connaître nos bateaux sur le bout des doigts. » Concrètement, il reste les skippers historiques de la classe : Erwan Le Roux (51 ans, Plastic Odyssey Fifty), vainqueur de la Route du Rhum en 2014 puis en 2022, Thibault Vauchel-Camus (47 ans, Solidaires en Peloton), victorieux de la Transat Jacques-Vabre en 2023, ou encore Laurent Bourguès (45 ans). Plus récemment, Luke Berry (39 ans, Le Rire Médecin) en 2023 et Matthieu Perraut (35 ans, Inter Invest) en 2024 ont rejoint la classe. 

Face à eux, de nombreux jeunes skippers, aussi talentueux que prometteurs : Basile Bourgnon (24 ans, Edenred) qui s’est distingué en Mini et en Figaro (2e de la Solitaire du Figaro en 2023) et a remporté la Dhream Cup en juillet, Erwan Le Draoulec (29 ans, Lazare), vainqueur de la Mini-Transat en 2017, Baptiste Hulin (29 ans, Viabilis), 2e sur la Route des Terres Neuvas, ou encore Pierre Quiroga (32 ans, Wewise), vainqueur de la Solitaire du Figaro en 2021, et Léonard Legrand (32 ans, Sodebo). Par ailleurs, Anne-Claire Le Berre (Upwind by MerConcept) s’apprête à marquer l’histoire en devenant la première fois à disputer la Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe à bord d’un Ocean Fifty.

La Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe sera d’ailleurs une découverte pour la majorité d’entre eux. Thibault Vauchel-Camus et Erwan Le Roux sont les seuls à l’avoir déjà disputé en Ocean Fifty. Matthieu Perraut et Luke Berry y ont participé en 2022 mais en Class40. En somme, sept skippers vont découvrir la mythique transatlantique ! Pour eux, c’est donc un rendez-vous en terre inconnue dans cette course qui marque l’aboutissement d’un cycle de quatre ans. La Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe, qui a bâti sa légende avec l’émergence des multicoques, reste le rendez-vous le plus prestigieux des Ocean Fifty. « Depuis ses débuts, la classe a toujours été pensée pour ces grands sprints océaniques,  explique Mathieu Baule, directeur d’Ocean Fifty Sailing. Ça fait partie de son esprit initial, de son histoire et de son ADN. »

La saison est toujours divisée en deux temps distincts : une première partie dédiée aux Grands Prix, des courses en équipage dans des baies fermées qui permettent d’affiner les réglages et de monter en puissance avant une seconde partie consacrée au solitaire. Les skippers ont d’ailleurs débuté ce volet solitaire en participant début juillet à la Dhream Cup, où ils ont pu assurer leur qualification pour la Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe. Ainsi, chacun continue de peaufiner ses réglages, d’affiner sa préparation et de ne rien laisser au hasard jusqu’au grand départ de la Route du Rhum, le 1er novembre prochain. Et tous ont une certitude : le match dans le match entre Ocean Fifty s’annonce palpitant de bout en bout !

It is the most legendary of solo ocean races, the one that, every four years, makes the hearts of a corsair city, a Caribbean-colored territory, millions of spectators, and the greatest sailors beat faster. In 2026, the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe will celebrate its 48th anniversary. A maturity that makes the event that has united Saint-Malo and Pointe-à-Pitre since 1978, more than ever, undoubtedly the finest and most demanding of solo races. This Friday, April 25, a year and a half before the 13th edition, OC Sport Pen Duick, the race's organizing company, set the tone for the next edition on the docks of Saint-Malo, in the presence of the event's major partners - the Guadeloupe region, the city of Saint-Malo, and the Brittany region - and Charles Caudrelier, the defending champion aboard the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild.


Sublime, intense, sunny, technical, committed, overwhelming since 1978, such is the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe. The famous solo transatlantic race has continued to write its history on a course free of any markings between Brittany and the Antilles, bringing together on the same starting line all types of boats without size limits.


The 2022 edition was a record-breaking one! 138 sailors at the start, 6 winners (Charles Caudrelier - Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, in Ultim 32/23, Erwan Le Roux - Koesio, in Ocean Fifty, Thomas Ruyant - LinkedOut, in IMOCA, Yoann Richomme - Paprec Arkéa, in Class40, Loïc Escoffier - Lodigroup, in Rhum Multi then Jean-Pierre Dick - Notre Méditerranée - Ville de Nice, in Rhum Mono), a reference time falling below the symbolic 7-day mark (6 days 19 hours 47 minutes and 25 seconds) between Saint-Malo and Pointe-à-Pitre for the first in Guadeloupe, Charles Caudrelier. The sporting aspect had set the clocks racing and made an impression. What can be said about the popular fervor encountered in Saint-Malo in a departure village covering an area of 70,000 m2, installed for thirteen days on the quays. A space whose ergonomics and circulation had been completely revised compared to the previous edition, promoting the festive and exceptional dimension in particular by offering stands and giant screens to allow the general public to celebrate the passage of the competitors through the locks. 1.5 million visitors came to taste the magic of Rum, in Saint-Malo, in 2022.

With eighteen months to go until the next edition, OC Sport Pen Duick, the organizer of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe, and all the race's stakeholders are relaunching the "dream machine." "The 2026 Rhum will be more intense, more festive, and even more deeply rooted in the region," announces Joseph Bizard, Managing Director of OC Sport. "This race is an iconic oceanic event, a true legend. For sailors, it is the transatlantic race of freedom. From a sporting perspective, it is the Atlantic sprint like no other. For the general public, it is certainly the popular event most deeply rooted in both memory and heart. For everyone, the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe is a celebration that provides everyone with visceral and collective emotions. 2026 will pay tribute to everything that makes Rhum a centerpiece of our heritage."



A visual identity inspired by an iconic current for a nautical launch


To honor the chapter that will open in the fall of 2026, the organizers took advantage of the Saint-Malo Boat Show to unveil the poster for the 2026 edition. A nod to the sailors who will line up at the start in a year and a half, the visual, designed by the Luciole agency, unveiled its lines on the sail of a racing trimaran. Coming to life in a bold graphic style, inspired by the iconic Bauhaus movement, revealing an emblematic style, a striking design and a vibrant palette, the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe 2026 poster embodies all the history and modernity of the race.








The partners' crew is growing stronger


While this launch of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe 2026 allows us to raise the colors of a new visual, it is also an opportunity for certain partners to renew their support for the race. Official Partner since 2017 and exclusive licensee, the company Armor-lux, flagship of the French textile industry, continues its collaboration with the organizer. "We are very happy to extend our partnership with OC Sport Pen Duick until the 2030 edition of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe. This first act of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe 2026 could only be written in Saint-Malo, in the presence of those who have always loved and supported it. The next eagerly awaited event, the publication of the Notice of Race, will kick off the sporting chapter of the finest solo ocean race.
