THE VILLAGES

The Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe attracts millions of visitors to enjoy the race villages and the entertainment at the start and finish. Enthusiasts, amateurs, newcomers who are simply curious, all come to see the extraordinary men and women who take on the Atlantic solo. In the Region of Brittany and particularly Saint Malo, the Corsair city, the visitors see their sailors preparing race across the ocean, while the Guadeloupe Region and Pointe-à-Pitre share in their happiness at having succeeded.
SAINT-MALO
Saint-Malo is an historic town in Brittany which was built between the 17th and 18th centuries and it retains a very strong historic heritage with original architecture as well as an environmental heritage, Saint-Malo still looks and feels authentic, especially within the walls of the original centre.
It is a city which has always looked out to sea. It has been the historic starting point of the Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe since the first edition in 1978. Saint Malo combines a love for the sea and all weathers. It has been and continues to be home to great sailors, from explorers to explorers, including corsairs, Cape Horn captains, fishermen as well as dozens of renowned offshore racers, the Corsair City has pursued an active policy of culture and tourism for more than four decades hosting major sailing events.
The Breton port has become a mecca for lovers of the open sea and of freedom, and loves to see visitors walk the ramparts and the quays, enjoying the unique and incomparable atmosphere.
Saint-Malo has a history of 48 years inherently joined to this race and is an integral part of the whole story of the race.

All in the same basin !
For the first time the Ultims or “sea giants” will be docked in the main basins. Until now because of their exceptional dimensions they were forced to moor outside, near the Bourse ferry terminal.
In 2022, they will join the rest of the fleet in the Vauban and Duguay-Trouin basins. All the boats will thus be grouped together along the emblematic quays of the race, at the foot of Intra-Muros and the Palais du Grand Large.
Parades to show off the boats
Another new thing for 2022, during its first week of opening, the village will also be animated by the evolution of the boats other than on that one single start day. In front of the ramparts of the City of Saint-Malo, each class will have a dedicated parade day to showcase the entire fleet to the general public. These activities will certainly add focus to the atmosphere of this period and the excitement. So too at the finish competitors will have parade days with the incredible panorama of the islands of Guadeloupe as a backdrop.

POINTE-A-PITRE
The city of Pointe-à-Pitre, located on the island of Grande-Terre, remains the historic home port of the race and boasts a rich and diverse architectural heritage, which offers, first and foremost, a wealth commensurate with its historical role and constitutes a strong component of its identity. Born in the mid-18th century on the marshy shores of the bay of the small marine cul-de-sac, it is around this body of water, an exceptional anchorage for ships, that it developed.
Welcomed first at the Bas-du-Fort marina in Gosier, then at the Darse and on the Place de la Victoire in Pointe-à-Pitre from 2002, since 2018, it is the ACTe Memorial which has become the setting for the arrivals of all the sailors. A true architectural masterpiece, it has become a powerful symbol dedicated to collective memory, like a tribute paid by the race to all the islands of the Antilles arc. Steeped in history, it has seen and will continue to see for a long time to come, the solo sailors completing their transatlantic crossing, welcoming them as heroes, from the first to the last, thanks to the enthusiasm of the Guadeloupean public.
In short, whether you are on one side or the other of the Atlantic Ocean, this gathering marks a popular celebration well known and awaited by all.
